Bill Schmidt

Schmidt resume

In my experience, it is rare to find Automation / Controls / IT Engineers who can: “Do It All.” I am that Engineer with 17 years controls & project management experience.

There has been much that I did not know and still do not, but there is nothing that I cannot quickly learn and most importantly: Successfully Implement.

I can BE the Controls Department

o Project management from start to finish

o Application engineering to find the right solution for sensing and control of any application given.

o Full electrical power and controls design and schematic creation.

o Bill of materials, purchasing, finding lowest cost solutions.

o Complete controls programming from the sensor level to PLC, HMI, motion, vision, all the way up through database and enterprise systems.

o ISA S88 / PackML machine phases via Allen-Bradley phase manager.

o Network design, administration and configuration

o Total startup and debug of controls system through field installation.

o Control system continued support via remote dial in / VPN or field visits

o Continuous assistance to maintenance for troubleshooting

o Preventative maintenance planning and implementation

I can RUN the Controls Department

o Mentor, manage, & be a resource to other engineers and techs.

o Implement standards such as UL508a, Libraries of reusable programming code, AutoCAD symbols and menus

o Department budgeting, scheduling, & maximizing resources

o Train and Implement Gallup Strength Training from training I received at Gallup University, as well as other management techniques.

Sensors: Too many to list but essentially I have experience with any and all.

PLC’s: Allen-Bradley (Logix, SLC, PLC-5 families), Modicon, GE/Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Honeywell

Servo/Stepper Drives: Allen-Bradley (Kinetix, Ultra families), AMCI, Emerson

HMI’s: Allen-Bradley (View SE & ME distributed & stand alone, Panelbuilder32), Wonderware InTouch, Uticor, TCP

Data Logging and Analysis:, Allen-Bradley RS BizWare, Wonderware InSQL

AC/DC Drives: Allen-Bradley, Control Techniques, Eurotherm, KB, Mitsubishi

Robotics: Fanuc M-410iB Four Axis & R-J3iB controller, handling tool software

Vision: DVT

Networking: Ethernet, Modbus, Modbus Plus, DeviceNet, DH+, DH-485, Remote I/O, Genius I/O, RS-422, RS-232

Test Sets: Custom PC based; Cabletest: Horizon & MPT

Databases: MS SQL Server , MySQL, Access

Consolidated Electrical Distributors (CED) –

(Distributor for Industrial Controls Primarily Rockwell Automation)

Automation Specialist

Expert technical resource for supporting PLC, HMI, Software & Networking Systems.

Carlson Systems Engineering –

(Leader in custom automation equipment primarily to the window, door and cabinetry industries)

Controls Engineering Team Leader

Omaha, NE

Omaha, NE

Completely modernized controls department within my first year and half.

o Obtained Professional Engineering license for various customer requirements and to enhance customer perception.

o Implemented becoming an UL508a fully self-certifying panel shop.

o Improved controls standards to move up from Allen-Bradley SLC processors and classic panelviews to more modern Logix and Panelview Plus platforms and distributed architectures using DeviceNet and Ethernet I/O.

o Created a standard library of AutoCAD schematic symbols and menus as well as PLC re-useable code.

Designed and fully implemented controls and programming of a custom full door routing machining center. All six faces of a door can be routed simultaneously. Machining center part of a five machine product line which reduced labor from 23 personnel down to only three.

o Utilized 24 Axis (8-XYZ capable router modules) of Allen-Bradley Kinetix 6000 Motion on a Control Logix platform.

o Programmed to fully implement industry standard CNC code but fully realized through ladder logic and integrated coordinated motion commands.

o Complete programming of fully database driven production utilizing FactoryTalk Transaction Manager & Plant Metrics utilizing SQL Server 2005.

Simulated Divided Light (SDL) aluminum bar processing machine. Notched and end coped 16 foot aluminum bars down to the desired size for SDL grids for windows and door glass.

o Minimized scrap bar remnants by integrating commercially available optimization software CutLogix 1D.

o Extensive customization of RS View SE using VBA to directly import daily batch production files, place into a spreadsheet style grid, and interface to the optimization software to reorder the batch to minimize scrap.
